It is possible to export textures from UT to a .pcx file and reimport it, but the textures in
Unreal Tournament are copyrighted. I wasn't sure if the engine licensees like Atari/Hasbro for
Nerf were granted the right to use the UT textures so I emailed Epic Software, the maker of UT,
about it. They replied that the textures in UT are copyrighted and cannot be used in Nerf without
infringing. I learned this when I was doing FoolsbravadoRemix.
So I started looking for freeware textures and I found some at http://www.planetunreal.com/texturelab/ and I used them in FoolsbravadoRemix, Warehouse, and EmpoweredRemix. They are ones that are PU-misc*.utx. THe PU stands for PlanetUnreal. I also bought a CD for $9.95 that said it had free to use textures for web pages and used it for C3D-misc.utx. There are a few other freeware textures sites that I've found, but some of them only want credit given in a text file (no problem) and some say that they can only be used for personal use which means that they can't be uploaded to a web site. Nerfed or UnrealEd can import textures in either or .pcx or .bmp format. They texture must be ONLY 256 colors or it won't work at all. Also the size needs to be either 64x64, 128x128, or 256x256. It will accept a few sizes larger than 256x256, but it is strongly recommended to stay at 256x256 or smaller. Also, it has to be square in size. Check out http://www.planetunreal.com/unrealed/tutorials/adv/textures/ for some info. I use Paint Shop Pro from JASC, but PhotoShop works pretty much the same way. Once you have an image, you may need to convert it. The images at Texture Lab were .jpg or .gif files. I convert them to .bmp files that are 256 colors at either 64x64 or 128x128 and sometimes 256x256. If you convert to .pcx make sure that you don't end up with a 2 color .pcx file. I did this accidently on few files and they look awful when they are imported. I found it easier to work with the .bmp files but you should be able to use either one. If you resize a file too much it may throw the aspect ratio off so much that it looks skewed. In that case, I do a select-copy as 64x64 image and paste it as a new image.
